Itinerario
After breakfast at the hotel, we will pick you up in our transport to head to the archaeological complex of Saqsayhuaman. After an introduction to the world of horse riding and the characteristics of the Peruvian Paso horse, we will have a time to familiarize ourselves with our respective horses and a demonstration of how to ride the Peruvian Paso horse; we will begin our adventure through spectacular landscapes and panoramic views.
Saqsayhuaman One of the most impressive architectural complexes inherited from the Inca period is precisely Saqsayhuaman, which due to its multiple qualities is considered to be one of the best examples that mankind has built on the face of the earth. When the Spanish conquerors first arrived in these lands, they could not explain how the Peruvian "Indians" (ignorant, wild, incapable of logical reasoning, just another animal species according to the white invaders) could have built such greatness; their medieval religious fanaticism led them to believe that it was simply the work of demons or evil spirits. Even today, many believe that the ancient Quechuas were incapable of achieving this wonder, so they claim that it was beings from other worlds, extraterrestrials with superior technology who made it all possible. However, our history and archaeology show that everything that causes admiration even in the most incredulous, is the undeniable work of the Incas, Quechuas, Andeans or whatever the pre-Columbian inhabitants of this part of the world are called.
After visiting Saqsayhuaman we will head towards Tambomachay, another important archaeological complex. Also known as the “Inca bath” or “Ñusta bath”, the monument is notable for its architectural excellence and the masterful assembly of the stones that form its walls. It also has an extraordinary hydraulic system, within which water itself was venerated as the source of life.
This is where we will begin our adventure on our horses towards the Piuray lagoon, passing through spectacular landscapes, panoramic views, small lagoons, etc. After about 5 hours of horseback riding, we will arrive at the shores of the Piuray lagoon, which has supplied water to the city of Cusco since the time of the Incas, who brought its waters to the Imperial City through underground aqueducts.
Likewise, the Piuray Lagoon holds in its waters an ancient legend in which the Sun God asked Manco Capac that his twin sons accompany him in his twilight and when the time came, they discovered that the son who walked the furthest had become the Huaypo lagoon and the daughter the Piuray lagoon. We will also be able to observe the migratory birds that arrive at this lagoon.
On the shores of the lagoon we will set up our campsite to enjoy the beautiful sunrise the next day.
After breakfast we will leave the Laguna de Piuray, which has supplied water to the city of Cusco since the time of the Incas, who brought their water to the Imperial City through underground aqueducts.
Likewise, the Laguna de Piuray holds in its waters an ancient legend in which the Sun God asked Manco Capac that his twin sons accompany him in his twilight and when the time came, they discovered that the son who walked the furthest had become the Huaypo lagoon and the daughter the Piuray lagoon.
After touring the shores of the lagoon, we will head past the town of Chinchero towards the beautiful Huaypo lagoon, with crystal-clear waters and rich in a great variety of fish, which is located 44 km from the city of Cusco.
According to legend, the Sun God asked Manco Capac that his twin sons accompany him in his twilight. When the time came, they discovered that the son, who had walked further, had become the Huaypo lagoon and the daughter the Piuray lagoon.
Throughout the walk, you will enjoy the natural beauty of the region with its varied flora and fauna, in which migratory and native birds stand out. You will also learn about the agricultural activity carried out by the farmers in the area.
Once we have finished the tour along the shores of the lagoon and its surroundings, we will set up our campsite on the shores of the Huaypo lagoon. Depending on the time of year we can make a campfire.
After breakfast we will begin the ride to the sanctuary of Tiobamba, which was built by colonial merchants who carried products to the valleys from the city of Cusco. In front of the temple we will have a short break to eat, and then continue our journey to the salt mines, located 40 km from the city of Cusco and at an altitude of 3,500 meters above sea level, which constitute a large area of salt extraction for human consumption dating back to pre-Columbian times. These mines are made up of around 3,000 natural pools of salt water, about 5 m2 in size, located on the slopes of the hills and you can still see the ancestral method for obtaining salt. The salt mines represent an important source of work for the inhabitants of Maras and other nearby towns.
It is in this place where we will set up our campsite.
In the morning after breakfast we will take the horses to begin the journey to the village of San Francisco de Asís de Maras, traveling along picturesque roads and enjoying fabulous landscapes. The town of Maras is located 46 km from the city of Cuzco and is located at 3,465 meters above sea level.
After riding for approximately an hour and a half, we will arrive at Maras, called “The City of Doorways” due to the finely carved stone ornamentation with floral details and heraldic shields that enhance the doors or facades of the colonial mansions and public buildings. In addition to appreciating this architectural detail, you will visit the picturesque Plaza de Armas and arrive at the temple of Maras, a small colonial church built of adobe with a granite carved cross in its front yard.
There you will enjoy a panoramic and impressive view of the mountains and snow-capped peaks of the Sacred Valley of the Incas, including El Chicón, La Verónica and Puma Huanca, among others, and we will take a first break of half an hour, to continue our journey to Moray.
The journey to Moray will take place between landscapes of extraordinary beauty in a hand-in-hand between the work of nature and the hard-working creator of man materialized in the various crops and animal husbandry.
After riding for approximately an hour and a half, during which we will have traveled 7 km southwest of Maras, we will arrive at Moray, located at 3,385 meters above sea level and 38 km northwest of the capital of the Inca Empire.
Moray is an important archaeological complex in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, one of its most interesting attractions being the Inca agricultural “greenhouses” or “laboratories” consisting of circular terraces built in large holes that were used to preserve seeds and crops.
After visiting Moray, we will visit some homes of the Mullak´as Misminay communities to interact with the inhabitants of the area who will welcome us in their homes to enjoy their experiences, their culture and the surrounding landscape.
After dinner and sharing moments of conversation with the local family, we will prepare our campfire; where we will have stories and legends of the community narrated by an elder or community leader who will allow us to delve deeper into the beliefs, customs and traditions of these enigmatic people.
After dinner, we will settle into our rooms to rest early and the next day go up to the Wañin viewpoint to have an impressive sunrise.
Early after breakfast we will leave for the Huañyn viewpoint, located at an altitude of 4000 meters above sea level. From there we will have an impressive and panoramic view of all the mountains of the sacred valley such as the snow-capped La Verónica, El Chicón, the snow-capped Ausangate and the entire plateau of Maras and Chinchero (it is recommended to bring binoculars); then we will descend towards the Soqma valley, (alt: 3000 meters above sea level) where we will have a small snack to continue with our tour in the Soqma valley towards the waterfall and the archaeological complex of Inka Raqay. Before ascending towards the waterfall we will have our lunch and then visit the waterfall and the archaeological complex of Inka Raqay. (alt: 3200 meters above sea level)
After visiting the archaeological complex of Inka Raqay we will return on our horses to the Pachar bridge near the highway that leads from Urubamba to Ollantaytambo. Passing through Inca hydraulic channels and terraces.
It is here where we will say goodbye to our horses and take our transport back to Cusco or to Ollantaytambo.
