Itinerario
After breakfast at your hotel, we will pick you up in our private transport to head to the archaeological complex of Saqsayhuaman.
One of the most impressive architectural complexes inherited from the Inca Empire is precisely Saqsayhuaman, which due to its many qualities is considered to be one of the best examples that mankind has built on the face of the earth. When the Spanish conquerors first arrived in these lands, they could not explain how the Peruvian "Indians" (ignorant, wild, incapable of logical reasoning, just another animal species according to the white invaders) could have built such greatness; their medieval religious fanaticism led them to believe that it was simply the work of demons or evil spirits. Even today, many believe in the inability of the ancient Quechuas to achieve such a wonder, which is why they claim that they were beings from other worlds, extraterrestrials with superior technology who made it all possible. However, our history and archaeology show that everything that causes admiration even in the most incredulous, is undeniably the work of the Incas, Quechuas, Andeans or whatever the pre-Columbian inhabitants of this part of the world are called.
After visiting Saqsayhuaman we will head towards Tambomachay, another important archaeological complex. Also known as the “Inca bath” or “Ñusta bath”, the monument is notable for its architectural excellence and the masterful assembly of the stones that form its walls. It also has an extraordinary hydraulic system, within which water itself was venerated as the source of life.
It is here that we will begin our adventure on our horses towards the Piuray lagoon, passing through spectacular landscapes, panoramic views, small lagoons, etc. After about 5 hours of horseback riding we will arrive at the shores of the Piuray lagoon. This lake has supplied water to the city of Cusco since the time of the Incas, who brought their water to the Imperial City through underground aqueducts.
Likewise, the Laguna de Piuray holds in its waters an ancient legend in which the Sun God asked Manco Capac that his twin sons accompany him in his twilight and when the time came, they discovered that the son who walked the furthest had become the Huaypo lagoon and the daughter the Piuray lagoon. We will also be able to observe the migratory birds that come to this lagoon.
On the shores of the lagoon we will set up our campsite to enjoy the beautiful sunrise the next day.
After breakfast we will leave the Laguna de Piuray, which has supplied water to the city of Cusco since the time of the Incas, who brought their water to the Imperial City through underground aqueducts.
After touring the shores of the lagoon, we will head past the town of Chinchero towards the beautiful Huaypo lagoon, with crystal-clear waters and rich in a great variety of fish, which is located 44 km from the city of Cusco.
According to legend, the Sun God asked Manco Capac that his twin sons accompany him in his twilight. When the time came, they discovered that the son, who had walked further, had become the Huaypo lagoon and the daughter the Piuray lagoon.
Throughout the walk, you will enjoy the natural beauty of the region with its varied flora and fauna, in which migratory and native birds stand out. You will also learn about the agricultural activity carried out by the farmers in the area.
Once we have finished the tour along the shores of the lagoon and its surroundings, we will set up our campsite on the shores of the Huaypo lagoon. Depending on the time of year we can make a campfire.
After breakfast we will begin the ride to the sanctuary of Tiobamba, which was built by colonial merchants who carried products to the valleys from the city of Cusco. In front of the temple we will have a short break to eat, and then continue our journey to the salt mines, located 40 km from the city of Cusco and at an altitude of 3,500 meters above sea level, which constitute a large area of salt extraction for human consumption dating back to pre-Columbian times. These mines are made up of around 3,000 natural pools of salt water, about 5 m2 in size, located on the slopes of the hills and you can still see the ancestral method for obtaining salt. The salt mines represent an important source of work for the inhabitants of Maras and other nearby towns. It is in this place where we will set up our campsite.
In the morning after breakfast we will take the horses to begin the journey to the village of San Francisco de Asís de Maras, traveling along picturesque roads and enjoying fabulous landscapes. The town of Maras is located 46 km from the city of Cuzco and is located at 3,465 meters above sea level.
After riding for approximately an hour and a half, we will arrive at Maras, called “The City of Doorways” due to the finely carved stone ornamentation with floral details and heraldic shields that enhance the doors or facades of the colonial mansions and public buildings. In addition to appreciating this architectural detail, you will visit the picturesque Plaza de Armas and arrive at the Maras temple, a small colonial church built of adobe with a granite carved cross in its front yard.
There you will enjoy a panoramic and impressive view of the mountains and snow-capped peaks of the Sacred Valley of the Incas, among which are El Chicón, La Verónica and Puma Huanca, among others, and we will take a first break of half an hour, to continue our journey towards Moray.
The journey to Moray will run through landscapes of extraordinary beauty in a hand-to-hand relationship between the work of nature and the creative work of man materialized in the various crops and animal husbandry.
After riding for approximately an hour and a half, in which we will have traveled 7 km southwest of Maras, we will arrive at Moray, located at 3,385 meters above sea level and 38 km northwest of the capital of the Inca Empire.
Moray is an important archaeological complex in the Sacred Valley of the Incas, one of its most interesting attractions being the Inca agricultural “greenhouses” or “laboratories” consisting of circular terraces built in large holes that were used to preserve seeds and crops.
After visiting Moray we will head to the Misminay CC to interact with the locals who will welcome us into their homes to enjoy their experiences, their culture and the surrounding landscape.
After dinner and sharing moments of conversation with the local family, we will prepare our campfire; where we will have stories and legends told by an elder or community leader who will allow us to delve deeper into the beliefs, customs and traditions of these enigmatic people.
After dinner we will settle into our rooms to rest early and the next day go up to the Wañin viewpoint to have an impressive sunrise.
Early after breakfast and enjoying the beautiful sunrise; the women of the community will teach us the secrets of their textile industry by demonstrating the process of shearing the land, dyeing, etc. After sharing pleasant moments with them and saying goodbye; We will head towards the Huañyn viewpoint, located at an altitude of 4000 meters above sea level. From where we will have an impressive and panoramic view of all the mountains of the sacred valley such as the snow-capped Verónica, El Chicón, the snow-capped Ausangate and the entire plateau of Maras and Chinchero (It is recommended to bring binoculars); then we will descend towards the Soqma valley, (alt: 3000 meters above sea level) where we will have a small snack to continue with our tour in the Soqma valley towards the waterfall and the archaeological complex of Inka raqay. Before ascending to the waterfall we will have lunch and then visit the waterfall and the archaeological complex of Inka Raqay. (Alt: 3200 masl)
In this place that has a panoramic view of the Soqma valley we will set up our campsite.
This day will be the last day of our ride; after breakfast we will descend through the Soqma valley towards the Vilcanota River on our respective horses where we will be able to appreciate along the way Inca terrace systems, Inca hydraulic canals, Inca tombs and we will enjoy the tranquility of the banks of the Vilcanota River. It is in this place where we will say goodbye to our horses where our transport will be waiting for us to take us to the train station in Ollantaytambo on the way to the town of Aguas Calientes. Where we will arrive at our hotel to rest and relax a little and the next day visit the historic sanctuary of Machu Picchu.
Early after breakfast, we will take the buses that will take us to the sanctuary of Machu Picchu.
We will have time to visit the sanctuary until noon at 12 pm. Then we will head to the town of Aguas Calientes for lunch, then we will take the train back to the town of Ollantaytambo and then the bus to the city of Cusco.
